As a child, I can easily remember my prized possession was a Walt Disney book that my father purchased for me and it featured the chronology of the early classic Walt Disney curious shorts. Some of these shorts were shown on the Disney Channel when I was younger but suffice to say, with all the recent animation, a lot of these classics have probably been forgotten or have been released on VHS video.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment are now releasing a few of these shorts on DVD for the first time (some have appeared on past Disney DVD releases) . The first three volumes were released on DVD on April 7, 2009.

A lot of these short films were created between the 1920-1940’s and typically featured characters that were not reoccurring. Some were released under the “Comical Symphony” moniker of keen shorts released between 1929-1939 which rarely featured any character dialogue but focused more on the animation accompanied by music and a singing vocal track. Disney has continued to earn shorts today and while the majority of the short attractive films are from the 1930’s through the 1950’s, volume 3 features an tantalizing short (”The Prince & the Pauper) from 1990.

Walt Disney Animation Collection Vol. 2.: Three Petite Pigs

The second volume of the Walt Disney Animation Collection featuring “Three Minute Pigs” contains a total of seven racy shorts. This volume features a wonderful number of episodes of animals that are under the threat of a wolf. Included are:

1. Three Exiguous Pigs – (8:51) A 1933 Droll Symphony bright short about the classic narrative of the “Three Runt Pigs” who live in their acquire homes but a ample dreadful wolf who wants to eat the pigs starts blowing the homes of two of the pigs down. Will the third pig’s home be strong enough to prevent the wolf from getting to them?

2. The Titanic Unpleasant Wolf – (9:30) A 1934 Funny Symphony inviting short features the return of the three small pigs in a unique sage that involves Red Riding Hood who comes to visit her grandmother (featuring the wolf in disguise) . Will the pigs be able to protect Red Riding Hood from the ample unpleasant wolf?

3. Three Microscopic Wolves – (9:30) A 1936 Laughable Symphony short featuring the three cramped pigs and the tremendous abominable wolf, who is training his three children how to go after the pigs. Directed by David Hand.

4. Lambert the Sheepish Lion – (8:26) A 1952 inspiring short about a stork who mistakenly delivers Lambert, a lion to a flock of sheep. The mother accepts Lambert as one of her absorb and raises it like a sheep but as Lambert grows up, he feels he may be different from the others. Directed by Jack Hannah and written by Bill Peet and Ralph Wright.

5. Chicken Dinky – (8:56) A Technicolor piquant short from 1943, Foxy Loxy wants to eat chicken for dinner and convinces Chicken Exiguous that the sky is falling. When he spreads the news to the chickens, the information proves to be groundless. But when Chicken Exiguous sees the cloud actually falling, the chickens are reluctant to maintain him. Foxy Loxy goes after the chickens.

Directed by Wilfred Jackson and written by Earl Hurd. Based on a narrative by Bianca Majolie.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“Walt Disney Animation Collection” is featured with an aspect ratio of 1:33:1. These classics are available on DVD for the first time but its indispensable to mention that these provocative shorts have not been digitally remastered or cleaned up.

As a matter of fact, you will contemplate a lot of the dust and scratches of the film and some of the animation examine exquisite for being nearly 70 years broken-down but others search for grainy and a bit former. Granted, these are not classic corpulent featured films but I hope one of these days, many of these classics do gather cleaned up or even digitally remastered.

As for the audio, audio is featured in Dolby Digital Surround Sound. I found that on my home theater system, the best selection on my receiver to belief these intelligent shorts was to switch it to mono or (if you have this capability) take stereo for all channels.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

There are no special features included on this DVD. But each volume does arrive with a free collectible litho print typically of the characters from the main featured legend.

JUDGMENT CALL:

As mentioned earlier in my review, my prized possession as a child was a Walt Disney booklet that covered the Walt Disney moving shorts in chronological order and had the opportunity to stare these classics. Now as an adult with children, a lot of the animation from Walt Disney that my child sees is the latest in CG animation.

But I wanted him to sit and ogle these lively shorts with me and obvious enough, he enjoyed them. These engaging shorts, the majority of them are simple and have no dialogue. Impartial music and sound effects (there were a few especially all from vol. 6 that have dialogue) but nevertheless, are simple and easy to understand.

For fans of classic Walt Disney animation and you magnificent great have moved on away from your VHS copies, the “Walt Disney Animation Collection” is a large collection of your classic Disney sharp shorts on DVD.

Many people who have purchased the “Walt Disney Treasures” DVD box sets from 2001, “Walt Disney’s Timeless Tales” from 2005 or the “Walt Disney’s It’s a Puny World of Fun!” DVD release from 2007 probably may not need any of these shorts as quite a number of them have appeared on DVD already.

But a few of the short films that are featured on the six volumes of “Walt Disney Animation Collection” have not been released on DVD until now.

Overall, It all comes down to your preference to the classic inviting shorts from long ago and whether or not you owned previous releases. For those who haven’t owned the previous Disney DVD shorts or box sets, now is a well-behaved time to launch because a lot of the past releases have been discontinued.

Otherwise, if you are a person who already owns the previous DVD releases that gain these shorts, unfortunately, these intelligent shorts offer nothing original and are not digitally remastered. There may be a few titles on these DVD’s that have not been released before on prior Walt Disney DVD’s but it all comes down to your preference and if these episodes are worth having on DVD.

Again, it’s critical to tag that volume 1 and volume 3 feature racy shorts featuring Mickey Mouse or a eminent Disney racy character. So, if you are specifically looking for Mickey Mouse racy shorts, you will get it on those two volumes.

But if you are a parent or grandparent who wants to demonstrate your children or grandchildren the Walt Disney animation that you grew up with or a person who has never seen these shorts and have been involving about them, then definitely give “Walt Disney Animation Collection” a chance.

I wasn’t looking for the [...] box plot of shorts so I was very delighted with what I got. Classic Disney shorts that my 4 year veteran niece loves. I remember these from when I was puny and they are as fun now as they were then. It doesn’t say that they were “remastered” so I didn’t question or want a original looking shows. The sound was aesthetic and the describe was glorious so it is getting a 4 out of 5 from me.

My 2+ year archaic has loved this video since he was 9 months weak, and it’s Collected his current kids’ (non-movie) video!

We bought a couple other Sing-A-Longs after this (Campout at Walt Disney World, and the Disneyland: Delighted Haunting one), and they don’t compare to this one. Those videos star cheesy kids who “act” for the camera and try to be cute. The kids in this video are really there to simply attend fabricate the environment, even though you study the same group of kids throughout the video.

Plus, this video concentrates more on the characters and the attractions, than the kids (during the Disturbed Mansion song, it stars only the Villians and you practically trudge the entire wander!) . Which makes it fun for adults and fans of Disneyland – it plays like a Disneyland home video! Also, this was filmed around 1989-1990, unprejudiced after Splash Mountain opened. Which means you earn to observe several attractions and restaurants that are no longer there: the Rocket Jets, People Mover, and Submarine – all in pre-1998 Tomorrowland.

My wife and I agree that the songs are also beautiful kindly, even the unusual ones (”Making Memories” and “Walking Good Down the Middle of Main Street, USA” near to mind) .

If you’re a fan of Disneyland and Disneyland videos (especially to net you in the mood before a vacation there), this is a must-own.

My daughter loves this movie. She sings and dances to all the songs. The video is the Disney characters at Disneyland with some kids (not cartoon) . They go on rides and unbiased play thru disneyland. The songs are blissful songs and you cant benefit but feel jubilant when you hear them. There is one “scary song” but when you examine donald ducks tail sticking out the encourage of the sheet, because he’s pretending to be a ghost, you cant attend but to laugh (my 3 yr old-fashioned cracks up every time) . I impartial bought another narrate along songs because she loves this one so considerable. The video has: Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, Donald, Roger Rabbit, Pooh, Eyeore, Tigger, Mary Poppins, Chip N Dale, Alice in Wonderland and the Rabbit, and more I honest cant reflect. This movie was well worth buying.

A lustrous and peaceful vastly underrated film is I Could Go On Singing, best remembered as the last film Judy Garland made in her astounding career. Some of her finest acting and singing are contained in this work, the epic of which is, legal as they say, pure soap opera, but riveting nonetheless, even for non-Garland fanatics. Contrary to what some have written, Garland looks sparkling in this film, quite healthy before she lost a bit too remarkable weight for her television series a few months in the future. Yes, she is not always costumed correctly and, at times her face and figure do suggest a haggard, bloated appearance. These moments are, in my conception, few and far between and for the majority of the film, Garland appears totally in control with radiance about her face that, unfortunately, she did not have later on. Better yes, her acting and singing are quite without equal, on the same level as some of her previous films. One number, “It Never Was You” is actually sung “live” and not prerecorded as is the usual intention with musical numbers. In numbers such as the title song and “Hello Bluebird”, Garland looks like she is having a total blast. My common has always been “By Myself”. Her rendition and performance of this song has to be heard and seen to be believed. As Aretha said in her autobio, Garland WAS a SOUL singer. Her acting with and without the delicate Bogard is also of a high standard, especially the justly well-known scene where Bogard tries to persuade Garland to develop for her audience that is waiting for her. A scene of raw emotion that is a bit difficult to explore…one feels like a voyeur witnessing what should be a totally private moment between two people.

Watching this film makes me bask in the noteworthy talents of Garland all over again. She was a proper “DIVA”, the like of which do not exist anymore.

By the time Judy Garland filmed her final motion represent “I Could Go On Singing”, Judy knew how to act and pull out all the stops better than anyone and was in advantageous dispute giving the most remarkable film vocal performances ever in this sadly overlooked engaging motion recount that has for years been one of my favorites!!! Garland looked sophiscated and every slump the Superstar (do a blow-up of the attractive veil and you will ogle what I mean!!!) and had a really expansive supporting cast who were all perfectly cast including an titillating performance by Jack Klugman as her fiesty manager. Musical numbers filmed before a live audience added grand excitement to Judy’s blooming performances and the electricity of Garland’s preparation moments before her entrance before the audience are soulfully charged and wonderful to experience!! Garland was THE most magnetic and soulful performer around and this spirited performance should have been at the least nominated for an Academy Award objective as Miss Garland should have won the Best Actress Oscar for her classic performance in “A Star Is Born” but that is a totally different sage that is one of THE legendary “Oscar Blew-It Stories” of all time with Groucho Marx exclaiming that it was the biggest robbery since Brinks…I was in High School when this fabulous musical drama came out and played the Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. and audiences wildly applauded after each of these amazing musical numbers and this only happens in a few musical films that feature Judy, Barbra, and Liza Minnelli!! The stormy passionate power of Garland’s extraordinary performance of the riviting “(I’ll Go My Plot) By Myself” is a shapely vocal masterpiece as is the blooming “Hello Bluebird” making these large songs all time top musical performances ever in motion recount history…the quite and haunting “It Never Was You” with fair Judy and piano in a masterful live retract with Garland at her sublime best and again riveting and making an athem out of the colossal title song “I Could Go On Singing” and you objective wish she would have gone on and on and on and would have with more serve from the entertainment industry and the media!!! Dramatic scenes are intense and try not to be incredibly moved when you recognize the shimmering interplay between Judy and Dirk during the fabulous legendary hospital scene!! Throughout Judy is at a dramatic peak along with peaceful laughable touches playing out each scene with her “Son” and his “Dad” with much depth and sensitivity. Thankfully this movie has been preserved first with its VHS release and now on DVD for anyone wanting to appreciate the greatest entertainer of the century giving one of the most soulfully charged performances of her unbelievable lifetime!! Bravo Judy and I am joyful that this ample performer and classic Story happened in my lifetime and we miss you alot Judy…

Okay, If you peek this movie expecting to look some amazingly deep, oscar proper movie, you’re going to be disappointed. If you’re easily offended (or disgusted) then you’re not gonna be joyful with this movie. For the rest of us (who appreciate a lil t&a and hilarious “i-got-my-thumb-cut-off” scenes), this movie’s vast. Perhaps i reflect it’s so fabulous because of my deep and profound appreciate for Justin Pierce (1975 – 2000 R.I.P) aka Luther. I dunno. I liked it though. I opinion it was absolutely hilarious, although at times it was kinda disgusting.

I admit, for the first ten or fifteen minutes I idea I was going to have to detroy this dvd and any evidence that I had purchased it. But I gave it a chance and this turned out to be one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen. Whoever was in charge of marketing this film ought to be fired, because judging from the conceal one would put a question to to gape a action/thriller. Well, it has action, a bit of gore but it’s mostly a comedy. Very comical stuff! I recommend it to anyone with a slightly deranged sense of humor!

Quick – can you name a movie that has Ben Stiller, Patrick Swayze, Helen Hunt, Liam Neeson, Bill Paxton, and Adam Baldwin in it? Probably not, as most people can’t, and what a shame. “Next Of Kin” is a elegant portrayal of the “Eastern Mountain Draw” as well as the worship of family and the bond of brothers.

I enjoyed this movie greatly. Although the residence has been somewhat rehashed many times the performances here crawl emotion. Especially Liam Neeson’s. If not for his performance in this movie I probably would have given it 4 stars, but he shines brightly here. The loyalty and admire of his character combined with the contempt and nettle of his character, what a spacious performance.

When this movie first came out I didn’t even know it. I don’t know how it fell off the radar mask before ever being noticed but it is cerainly worth a notice.

Buy it – appreciate it, over and over.

In terms of unbiased pure station, Next of Kin is — in many ways — a typical example of the unconventional cop vs. the mob film genre of the 1980s…However, if Next of Kin is ultimately a genre fraction, its aloof a better-than-average example of the what the genre is grand of. Certainly, its probably the only film ever made by Patrick Swayze that can legitimately be called underrated.

Plotwise, the film sounds almost like a parody. Patrick Swayze is a frail hillbilly from Appalacia Country who has left leisurely his rustic family to become a vast city cop and to romance sophisticated music teacher Helen Hunt. (Is there a reason why stout city cops with simple backgrounds always seem to extinguish up romancing music teacers in these films? ) Swayze’s younger brother Bill Paxton also comes to the city, to pursue a life of petty crime that ends up getting him killed by mobster Adam Baldwin which leads to yet another Swayze brother coming down to the city, this one played by Liam Neeson. As Neeson seeks revenge, Swayze is forced to return to his roots in order to avenge both his brother and protect his girlfriend.

Yet somehow, all of this works rather effectively on cover. The film is directed by Englishman John Irvin who has made a rather unsung career out of bringing a stronger-than-usual sense of characterization to genre films (the best example being the war film Hamburger Hill) . Although Irvin’s filming of the action scenes are a slight pedestrian, he peaceful has a strong visual sense and manages to vividly incompatibility the conflicting worlds of the country and the city. The film’s supporting cast is well chosen and both the heroes and the villians all advance to life with a surprising amount of dignity. At no point do any of the actors demean their roles by playing …typical hillybillys or, for that matter, …typical mobsters and that shows an modern and admirable amount of integrity for a film of this sort. Paxton isn’t on cover long but remains, as always, a likeable presence and Adam Baldwin makes a compellingly understandable and hissable villian. Michael J. Pollard shows up as a hillbilly and brings his trademark quirkiness to the proceedings while the role of the nerdy mob scion is played by Ben Stiller, of all people. Its a tiny jarring to ogle Stiller explain up on shroud (especially playing an essentially villianous role) yet he gives a strong performance without resorting to do any standard Stiller bits. Helen Hunt’s role is …typical but she’s probably far warmer in this role than she’s been in any of her prestige pictures. Certainly, the best performance in the film is given by Liam Neeson who dominates the proceedings with the grim sincerity he brings to his quest for revenge. This Irish actor also manages to perfectly seize the unusual accent of the Appalacian space. As an actor, Patrick Swayze has always been small and he’s always been better at projecting sincerity than complexity. Luckily, his role in Next of Kin has been designed to require itsy-bitsy more of him than sincerity and, if Next of Kin doesn’t describe his best performance, its certainly his most likeable.

Next of Kin isn’t a large film. As stated before, the record is a tad bit too predictable and that’s only made more determined when the narrative is populated by a better-than-average cast and directed by a truly talented director. However, this is a rare genre section in which it is determined that everyone enthusiastic actually achieve in their best efforts to invent a worthwhile film and the results are both admirable and interesting.

Spring, Summer, Topple, Winter… and Spring ushers the audience into calm solitude through meticulously planned cinematography that maximizes the achieve of the natural environment. The environment is significant to the anecdote as it takes dwelling in an idyllic valley that is untouched by the continually modernizing civilization. In the middle of the valley is a runt lake in which a exiguous floating monastery drifts by the forces of the nature. This has an allegorical meaning as it supports the belief that everything is fraction of a greater idea in which individuals can earn slight ripples that will affect the individual throughout life.

Each frame is carefully planned as color, originate, and movement advance together into a meaningful expression of either spiritual, good, existential meaning, or a personal meaning which rests slow the peruse of the beholder. The film becomes a sequential succession of spiritual or existential paintings that are snappy exchanged before the viewers’ retina. The mise-en-scene is exceptionally notable as Ki-duk Kim has left nothing to chance, yet everything is based on chance. This visual oxymoron is very distinguished like the chaotic expression which nature expresses itself within each season.

The anecdote is split into the four seasons as it begins and ends with spring as the title suggests. The beginning takes dwelling in the spring as an former monk cares for a young boy who discovers the consequence of guilt the hard arrangement as he torments a fish, a frog, and a snake. The shots have symbolic meaning, yet the many frames offer worthy room for personal interpretation as the boy deals with everyday life under the supervision of the monk.

Summer opens the door to treasure, affection, and desire as the young boy has become a young man. This begins with the faded monk who receives a young woman that is sick. The mother of the young woman requests that the monk serve to cure her daughter that seems to suffer from some sort of restless melancholic ailment. The young woman and the young man playfully open a romantic relationship that leads them into a physical relationship. This relationship drives the young man to give up a life in the cramped monastery as he sneaks away an early morning.

Fall is the season when the woods change from green to an explosion of color. Ki-duk Kim employ this natural phenomenon of the seasons to a rotund enact as the season displays the aftermath of a vengeful strikeout from the young man who now is a man in his 30s. The man now has to learn the consequences of his actions through a painful internal crisis, in which he seeks correct and spiritual redemption by returning to the tranquility of the valley.

Winter follows descend and the man is now in his 40s, as he once again returns to the monastery in order to catch over for the ancient monk. It becomes a time for spiritual search and right purging for the man who tries to enjoy the shoes of his conventional teacher and guide. This means that he must salvage a method to deal with his past, indicate, and future by rigorously following a rough and narrow path.

When spring returns the film brings the audience in a burly circle as it returns to where the film once started. The cyclical message is a fundamental cornerstone of Buddhism and the message that the film portrays. However, it does not mean that things will be the same in the future as each ripple created will cause some change in the environment, which is skillfully depicted through the exercise of the animals that Ki-duk Kim incorporates into each season. In the initial spring there is a dog and as summer comes along it brings a rooster while a cat enters with the plunge. A snake appears in the winter as and as the spring returns it brings the audience a turtle. These animals also describe the demolish of men’s lives as they could be reincarnations of other human’s, which is a result of the ripples they once created.

This is a truly sizable work of art that is also a medium for the Buddha’s teachings.

Zen is a school of Buddhism that traditionally does not rely on words or letters and is based on the “mind to mind” transmission of the master’s teaching to the student.

Many apt reviews have covered the astonishing fable line and the cinematic qualities of the film. I would like to manufacture a few comments on the Buddhist and Zen teaching elements of the film.

1. The setting — Buddha was enlightened under a tree and the natural world serves as the context for many Buddhist teachings. The gigantic Japanese Zen Master, Dogen, wrote essays on the lives of mountains and rivers and non-sentient beings.

2. Cycles — The seasonal cycle in the film is symbolic of the cycle of life with an faded man, a child, youth, young lovers, parents, and faded man again. Only if we live, as Dogen said, in Being/Time can we transcend these cycles.

3. Karma — The child, because of his choice or his propensity kills a fish and more… Every decision and mysterious propensity leads to consequences.

4. The Island temple and the raft — The runt temple is on a drifting island connected to the shore by a raft indicating the impermanence even of the Master’s abode and the refuge. A quiz from Zen point of belief is — Where is Buddha?

5. The Master — He teaches with few words — typical of Zen tradition — teaches by example. (Actually… Zen masters are blabbermouths who did anything to swear their students that they view would work. Existence is the ultimate blaberbody) .

6. The Gateless Gate — One of the two immense Zen Koan (cases studies for contemplation) collection is called in English “The Gateless Gate”. To approach the boat from the shore and to come the Master’s room from the bedroom there is a door but no wall.

What is reality? Is there any valid separation?

7. Animal teachings — A fish, a rooster, a cat, rocks, falling leaves, snow, water and waves, the sky, and mountains all play roles in the teaching process. Does a dinky fish have Buddha nature or not?

8. Skillful Means — In Zen tradition there is dynamic and noteworthy teaching, when significant, using shouts, hitting, and dynamic dialogues and any other means. The Master uses a awful cat’s tail to write the sutra on the deck of porch of the temple. There is more but you must stare this movie…

9. No eyes, no ears, no tongue, no body, no mind. no seeing, no hearing, no tasting, no touching, no thinking — This line from the Heart Sutra is a core teaching of Buddhism — especially Zen Buddhism. In the most haunting scene in the movie, the Master’s eyes and mouth are covered with paper — what does this mean to you? Has reality been cleave or is this a current reality?

Spring Summer Plunge Winter Spring. Where is it and when does it commence and extinguish?

Oh what an out-and-out joy is this film!

As you know by now, the fabulous James Cagney sings, dances and acts his draw through this rousing biopic of George M. Cohan. He’s directed by Michael Curtiz, a director who apparently could work in any genre of movie, and gain masterpieces. Pull up his name on imdb and you’ll ogle what I mean.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Yankee Doodle Dandy! Click Here

Anyways, the film traces his life from his infant vaudevillian beginnings to his conquering of Broadway. After seeing this, you’ll know why there’s a statue of Cohan in Times Square.

The acting, as expected, is estimable, with the sweet Joan Leslie as his admire interest Mary, Walter Huston as his dad; Cagney’s sister plays Cagney’s sister…but what will bring you to discover this movie again and again are the musical interludes.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Yankee Doodle Dandy! Click Here

Cagney is simply spectacular. He is a comet, bouncing around the Broadway stage. His dancing often flirts with straight-out levitation. I yelp there are times when his feet coast across the camouflage…

Then judge the songs…”Yankee Doodle Dandy”, “Mary”, “Give My Regards to Broadway” and the most patriotic song I’ve ever heard, “Over There.”

That song was written for the troops of WW I, and this film was being made when Pearl Harbor was attacked. The map this one song is traditional in this film, I guarantee, will conclude with you forever. And brilliant that this movie was made during that time only enhances your experience…but I didn’t know it until afterwards, and it made no inequity.

And that leads to the one thing I feel is overlooked in most reviews of this film: the script. It’s has a strong yarn, astronomical lines, terrific set-pieces and exquisite twists. It’s silly as all-get-out, and heart-wrenching when you least put a question to it.

The movie is as American as can be…the rags-to-riches rise of the central figure in Broadway history (the Broadway musical being essentially an American creation), the intention his family travels to all the unique states as they are incorporated…the evolution of Modern York City…WW I…WW II…it’s all here!

And from beginning to slay, Cohan (and the filmmakers) wear their “Great Aged Flag” on their proverbial sleeves, proudly and unabashedly. Patriotism is a positive theme througout the film, rising to dizzying heights fair before the credits. Patriotism portrayed simply and honestly, without any hard political twisted or satirical edge.

The DVD, one of those sweet Warner 2-disc sets, is exemplary…tall transfer, nice extras…bravo Warner, again, for treating your classics with respect.

It’s inarguable: this is one of the stout films of all time. I envy those of you about to examine it for the first time, and I order you it won’t be your last!

GREAT FILM! And making it to the top 100 (for the 100 best movies ever made), this musical starring James Cagney as George M. Cohan is about the life of Cohan and the 4 Cohan’s. George Cohan, wrote songs such as “The Yankee Doodle Boy”, “Give My Regards to Broadway”, “Overthere”, “You’re a Broad Broken-down Flag”, “Mary”, “Off The Relate”, “H.A.R.R.I.G.A.N.” etc….

Buy,Download, Or Stream Yankee Doodle Dandy! Click Here

In this movie playing his sister (Josie Cohan), is really his dependable sister (Jeanne Cagney) . And on the station, Eddie Foy was played by a son of his (Eddie Foy Jr.) . At the ending when James Cagney is walking down the stairs, then is tap dancing was not in the script. Originally Cagney was to unprejudiced hump down, the rest he improvised.

If you’re eager in musicals with respectable stories to drawl and song & dances numbers (that were first done by Cohan when the plays first came out and were a gigantic hit.), this would be a estimable movie to score for your classic musical collection.

For the first two series Torchwood was your standard solve the outrageous space of the week series but that all changed with series three. First and foremost, the bigggest disagreement is that there are only five episodes instead of the usual 12 but that is because all five episodes comprise one mini-series mega event where the BBC showed one episode each weeknight during a single week as opposed to one note a week. Those are the minor technical differences and here are the stylistic differences.

Previous incarnations of Torchwood were a mix of frivolity, political thriller, and science fiction while series three puts the political thriller aspect front and center with the jokes and scifi taking supporting roles. The tone is emotionally taut, psychologically upsetting, and decidedly dark–all perfect motifs for a expose designed only for adults. If you are wanting a Dr. Who style walk into the imagination where you come by a bit stunned but return with a smile on your face this is not going to be to your liking at all because this time Torchwood takes us into a nightmare realm where many of the humans in charge seem more alien and threatening than the accurate aliens, who are definitely scary themselves, and that insures you won’t return from this straggle with a smile unless you’re a sadistic freak. Does the darkness overwhelm the expose? Not at all! As I said the political thriller aspect is front and center and its pacing almost feels like this is Torchwood 24, especially seeing how each episode represents one day of time so that by the destroy of this series only five days have passed for the Torchwood crew.

Should you seize Torchwood series 3? Well if you are more of a fan of Dr. Who and only inspect Torchwood because it is a Who spin-off I’d wait and peep it as it airs to produce determined it isn’t too realistic to be delectable for you. If you capture Torchwood over Dr. Who then definitely do your order in as you’re not likely to be disappointed with the direction RTD has taken the note this time. Personally, this has been the best science fiction on the puny or colossal mask this year (I haven’t seen Moon yet so that could change) and retain in mind I am a large Trekkie and adored the fresh Star Toddle movie! That’s factual, a die hard Trekkie said Torchwood series 3 was better than Star Run the Reboot. Granted, Journey had better blockbuster visuals and plot battles but Torchwood, by far, told the better myth. I also judge the acting was better in Torchwood than Crawl although there isn’t as huge as a distance between the two as there was in spot quality.

This is not Torchwood. Torchwood 3 is a team captained by Jack Harkness who protect Cardiff from a rift in time and position. It is a science fiction explain filled with super gadgets and aliens and enormous relationships.

Children of Earth is a political drama with none of the above. TPTB took away the Hub and all their toys so they couldn’t place themselves. They decided that the present was suddenly “Jack’s tragedy”. Awful Jack can’t collect a break; they want to manufacture him into the Doctor (who? ) . They destroyed his home, his life and his character in the name of adult drama. They took an established demonstrate with an established dwelling and established characters and changed the name of the game.

Of course people are upset. We liked our indicate, we liked our characters. We finally stare Ianto step up and become Jack’s equal, found out a bit about his background and then have it yanked out from under our feet. Then we are patted on the heads and told that we don’t rep to have an notion. It feels like now that Russell T Davies is done with Dr. Who, he decided to redo Torchwood after he practically admitted he ignored it for two years.

I can’t possess I waited so long for such disappointment.

It’s a dash of the soul as a man goes home in his heart, in this dramatization of the just anecdote of Alvin Straight, who drove a lawn mower over three-hundred miles through the situation of Iowa and into Wisconsin, to gawk his brother, a stroke victim with whom he had not spoken for ten years. “The Straight Yarn,” directed by David Lynch, recounts the fable of Alvin (Richard Farnsworth), who place out to behold his brother, Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton), upon hearing of his stroke. Alvin is prevented from driving because of unpleasant eyesight, and he won’t grasp a bus because he doesn’t trust another’s driving. A widower who lives with his daughter, Rose (Sissy Spacek), Alvin, not a man of means, resorts to the only diagram he knows how, to accept to Lyle. He needs to effect the terrible blood tedious them before it’s too late; an estrangement born of “arouse and pride.” Hauling a make-shift trailer, and with three five-gallon cans of gas and a cooler chubby of hot dogs, Alvin sets out, alone and positive, on his lawn mower. Now in the twilight of his life, having learned to “separate the wheat from the chaff,” the straggle affords Alvin plenty of time to believe on his life, and steels him in his quest to do what he feels he has to do. Along the method he befriends and is befriended by the strangers he encounters; a testimony to the bountifulness of the human spirit. When a young man asks him what the worst thing is about being old-fashioned, he replies, “Remembering when you were young.” Richard Farnsworth gives the performance of a lifetime as Alvin, this stubborn, prideful man, who has learned humility with age, and you can notice the wisdom of his years in his eyes. Farnsworth connects with the audience from the beginning, aptly conveying the yearning of a soul in need of atonement, and the determination of the man to enact his amends. Sissy Spacek, also, gives a terrifically nuanced performance as Rose, the “tiresome” daughter who lives daily with demons of her contain. That the members of the Academy failed to nominate her for best-supporting actress for her work here is nothing short of criminal; her Rose is a sparkling fragment of work. David Lynch, as well, has done a noteworthy job of bringing Alvin’s fable to the mask. He has woven a rich visual and emotional tapestry, all poignantly delivered with a gentle hand. Beautifully photographed, the lush vistas of the Midwest consider Alvin’s space of mind, underscoring the deeper meanings of what is really a spiritual swagger, during which the past mingles with the prove. Lynch has taken a wistful, almost poetic near throughout, which, together with the tale is reminiscent of Ingmar Bergman’s “Wild Strawberries.” The scene in which Alvin finally meets up with Lyle is perfectly and touchingly executed, and is one of the most memorable scenes in the movie. The supporting cast includes James Cada (Danny), Everett McGill (Tom), Barbara E. Robertson (Deer Woman), John Farley (Thorvald), and Kevin P. Farley (Harold) . With an artistic hand, Lynch has crafted an unforgettable film. “The Straight Legend” is Alvin’s legend, but the hobble belongs to us; a reminder of what is really indispensable in life, and the needs we all piece at one time or another. It’s an exciting movie that will touch you and fabricate you reflect, as well; and as far as I’m concerned, that’s about as gracious as it gets.

With ‘The Straight Story’ David Lynch has weaved together a subtle, enchanting yarn about age, regret, and family. The fable is of Alvin Straight, a 73 year veteran man who has seen most of what life has to dish out and learns that his brother suffered a stroke. With poor eyes and no license, he sets out on a slouch on a riding lawnmower to sight his brother, who he hasn’t spoken to in ten years.

What I loved most about this movie is the simplicity; of the yarn, the characters, the filming. Yet within that classic style is a movie that is incredibly animated. The stories that Alvin has to command about his life are saddening, touching, and almost gross. He talks about being conventional, about fighting in World War II, and about his regrets of not speaking to his brother. He runs into quite a few people along the diagram who abet him out, and their stories contribute to a beautifully crafted script.

Richard Farnsworth is convincing in the role of Alvin. His abilities are most especially outlined in the dark tone of his tell, and the witness of regret and hope in his eyes. It is rare that I have grown to respect and savor a character so grand. David Lynch’s direction is not dismal or creepy like his other works, but carefully and nicely photographed in mountainous harmony with the script. The cinematography is smoothe, and the extended takes note his abilities as a director and the actors abilities as well.

“Anchor’s Aweigh” is a fun tiny film. It is a musical in the aged MGM tradition, with objective enough state to stitch together some apt song and dance. Very blissful and light hearted, with some memorable tunes. Gene Kelly is his usual label of broad, and it’s fun to search for Frank Sinatra as a stunned, skinny dinky kid who has no luck with “dames.” Certainly not the Frank of his later years.

One of the sweetest moments is Frank singing “Brahm’s Lullaby.” It is very intimate and nice, coming off better than some of his “star moments.” The sizable symphony numbers, lead by José Iturbi, are well done. “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2″ is outstanding. Gene Kelly dances his contrivance around that Mexican Hat Dance, and, of course, does his renowned skedaddle with Jerry the Mouse.

The DVD is actually well packed and worth the recall. There is a itsy-bitsy “Making of…” segment regarding the Jerry the Mouse sequence. This is an excerpt from Patrick Stewart’s “When the Lion Roared” MGM documentary. There are movie trailers for “On The Town” and “Remove Me Out to the Ball Game” in addition to the feature attraction.

Altogether a very nice package for a fun film.

An extraordinary film, as is usually the case with Gene Kelly’s work. Significant numbers by Frank include “I Descend In Fancy Too Easily” and his three numbers with Gene: “We Abhor To Leave”, “I begged Her” and “If You Knew Suzie”. However, the inclusion of the annoying Kathryn Grayson does lend for some loss in enjoyment. Her frightfully overly-operatic exclaim can be immensely spine-chilling and her forced acting leaves distinguished to be desired.

The highlight of Anchors Aweigh would have to be Gene Kelly! Swoon…*thud*. Splendid as ever, one cannot back but tumble in treasure with the blueprint Gene converses with Lola on the phone! The renowned boxer shorts scene has Gene prancing about for a friendly miniature or two in his boxers, and that is enough to send any female fan of Gene up the ceiling into Gene-heaven! His “the wretchedness song” with animation Jerry the mouse is as thrilling and charming as a number can possibly collect. Also, his dance solos which include the “Mexican hat dance” and also the fantasy romance dance, are simply marvellous. A must for any musical fan, and critical for anyone who dares to call herself or himself a Gene Kelly affecionado!
